Fight Or Flight: Approaches to overcoming anxiety 2-Hour Workshop

Anxiety is often misunderstood, yet it’s a completely natural and universal human response. Hard-wired into our nervous system, it’s the brain’s way of keeping us safe from danger — not a flaw or weakness, but a vital survival mechanism. Whether it’s a racing heart before a job interview, the instinct to step away from a crowded space, or feeling tense after a difficult event, these are all signs that your brain is working hard to protect you from perceived threats.  But in today’s fast-paced world, this system can become overactive. Instead of responding to real, immediate threats, it can start firing off in response to emails, deadlines, meetings, and social pressures. When anxiety becomes chronic or overwhelming, it can interfere with our decisions, relationships, and wellbeing — making it harder to function at work, at home, and within ourselves.  That’s why this workshop is so needed. It offers a fresh and compassionate lens on anxiety, rooted in clinical experience and neuroscience. We take a deep dive into the body’s stress responses — fight, flight, freeze, fawn and flop— and look at how they show up in daily life. We explore why these patterns exist, how they develop, and what happens when they start working against us instead of for us.  Through a blend of psychoeducation, shared experiences and practical tools, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how their own mind and body respond to stress. More importantly, they’ll learn accessible, effective ways to calm the nervous system, shift their response, and take back control.

Workshop outline:

Understand the four core stress responses: fight, flight, freeze, fawn and flop
Recognise how anxiety shows up physically, emotionally, and behaviourally
Identify personal patterns that may escalate stress and explore healthier alternatives
Learn evidence-informed techniques for calming the nervous system
Develop a shared language around anxiety, reducing stigma and improving confidence to seek support early
This workshop is designed for everyone, but especially benefits those facing high stress and rapid change in emotionally demanding, fast-paced workplaces. It offers practical tools and clinical insights to manage anxiety, build resilience, and promote a culture where mental wellbeing is understood and prioritised.

We can’t eliminate anxiety — nor should we. But by understanding it better, we can lessen its impact, respond more skilfully, and develop a kinder, stronger relationship with ourselves.
