I cope with it, society can’t: Debunking taboos around coping strategies 2-Hour Workshop

Life is a rollercoaster—and how we cope during challenging times shapes our ability to move forward. Many coping strategies are stigmatised and misunderstood, often leading to unhelpful responses from those around us. This reinforces entrenched societal stigmas about mental health struggles, which keep people stuck.  This workshop creates a safe, non-judgemental space to explore the wide variety of ways people manage stress and emotions. We focus in on the psychology behind common coping mechanisms deemed unhelpful — from doomscrolling, task-avoidance and supressing our emotions — to more stigmatised behaviours like over or under-eating, using substances, and self-harm. These are just a few examples, but the list is endless, and what helps one person might not help another. It is personal, often private, and always shaped by experience. We help participants distinguish between and identify reactive, harmful habits and conscious, effective coping.  Through applied psychoeducation, participants will gain practical tools to assess their own coping styles. This isn’t about eliminating every response deemed unhelpful by societal standards; it’s about empowering people to non-judgementally recognise what works for them, understand why it works and, if needed, how to adapt in healthier ways over time. We also tackle workplace implications — how misunderstood behaviours show up in professional environments and what managers and colleagues can do to support without judgement.
