Living On The Edge: spotting and responding to risk-taking behaviour

Not all pain hides in silence. Sometimes it fights to be seen — in our words and actions, in desperation, and in the things we find hardest to understand. Risk-taking behaviour can be subtle, challenging, or even scary, both for the person and those around them. Behind behaviours like harmful substance use, self-neglect, confrontational aggression, or boundary-pushing, there’s often a quieter story underneath — one about struggle, chronic stress, unmet needs or unsupported illness or trauma.  This workshop provides a psychologically informed space to explore what risk looks like, how it makes us feel, and how we can respond with understanding and compassion — not judgement. We’ll also examine the role stigma plays in distorting our understanding, and be a barrier to seeking help when we need it most. Delivered by registered Mental Health Nurses, this session blends clinical insight with real-world relevance, helping delegates support others while staying reflective about their own responses, assumptions, and behaviours.

Workshop outline:

By the end of this session, delegates will:
Identify signs of risk-taking in workplaces and communities
Understand how stress, trauma, and coping impact behaviour
Reflect on personal reactions and unconscious judgements
Apply a non-judgemental, harm-reduction approach
Know where to access further support for risk-taking behaviours
This workshop is ideal for any organisation looking to foster a mentally healthy, non-judgemental team or community.
