See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil: Challenging Stigma in Mental Health and Mental Illness 2-Hour Workshop
Stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness continues to be one of the greatest barriers to recovery, help-seeking, and compassion. This powerful workshop reveals how social attitudes, and psychological biases combine to create and maintain stigma - especially in relation to the more misunderstood aspects of mental ill-health, such as hearing voices, harmful coping, risk-taking behaviour and suicidal thoughts. Drawing on real-world experience and current evidence, our mental health nurse-educators guide participants through common misconceptions and unconscious biases, encouraging open conversation about how we perceive and react to others’ distress. We look at how judgement and fear often replace empathy when someone’s behaviour doesn’t fit the “expected” norms - and how this contributes to feelings of shame, isolation, and hopelessness. When people feel judged or dismissed, they are less likely to ask for help, speak honestly about what they’re experiencing, or believe that recovery is possible. This session creates a safe and engaging space to unpack personal biases, challenge myths, and replace assumptions with true understanding and empathy. Stigma doesn’t just affect the person experiencing distress, it also holds back our ability to support recovery and build mentally healthier spaces for everyone. Participants are empowered to see beyond labels and behaviours, and to reframe their understanding through a lens of hope, recovery, and insight.
